The Client
Kingston Creative is a non-profit arts organisation that was founded in February 2017. The organisation’s vision is to make Kingston a Creative City, and its mission is to empower Caribbean creatives so that they can create economic and social value, gain access to global markets, and have a positive impact on their local communities. Kingston Creative believes in collaboration and works with a public-private and third sector partnership; a team of organisations that are committed to empowering creative people and transforming Downtown Kingston. The organisation aims to develop a vibrant, inclusive Art District and a Creative Hub for training and development and in the long term, achieve sustainable national development through growing the creative economy.
One of the major challenges that Jamaican creatives and cultural attraction owners face is a lack of access to technology and digital marketing tools. Many of these businesses may not be technologically savvy and may not know how to effectively use digital platforms to reach potential customers. Additionally, there is currently no central hub of information that makes it easy for people to find and learn about local creatives, merchants, and attractions.
The Challenge
The Approach
To solve the challenges several key steps were taken to ensure an optimal outcome was achieved. These steps included design and discovery, planning, development and deployment.
- Design and Discovery: The first phase of the project is the design and discovery. During this phase, we worked closely with the client to gather requirements, understand their objectives and goals, and identify the key features and functionalities that will be required for the web and mobile platforms. We conducted stakeholder interviews, and user research to understand user needs and workflows from which wireframes and mock-ups of the platform to help the client visualise the final product were created.
- Planning: Once the design and discovery phase was complete, we consulted and worked with the client to plan and prioritise the development of the web and mobile platforms. This phase includes creating detailed project plans, identifying the resources needed for the project, and determining the timelines for delivery.
- Development: During this phase our team of developers designed, built, and tested the web and mobile platforms. We worked in 2 week sprints with regular demos to ensure the client got to consistently provide feedback and review the progress of the product.
- Deployment: During this phase, we worked with the client to deploy the web platform to a production environment, and we also provided training and support to ensure that the client was able to effectively use and maintain the platform. This includes data migration, configuring hosting, and making sure the platform is stable.
The Solution

The website is designed to be user-friendly and accessible, making it easy for Jamaican creatives and cultural attraction owners to use, even if they lack experience with technology or digital marketing tools. This can help bridge the gap in access to digital tools and level the playing field for Jamaican creatives and cultural attraction owners by providing them with the means to effectively market themselves to potential customers.
Additionally, by providing a centralised hub of information about local creatives, merchants, and attractions, Kingston Creative aims to make it easy for people to discover and engage with the unique cultural offerings of the Jamaican creative community. By doing this, they hope to promote Jamaica’s cultural heritage, support local businesses and creatives, and contribute to the development of a sustainable creative economy.
Augmented Reality
The app allows users to view artwork at specified locations in a more interactive way using augmented reality technology, which would give them a more engaging experience.
Mobile Ticket Wallet
Users will be able to store and access their tickets for tours, events, and excursions directly from the mobile app, eliminating the need to carry physical tickets.
In summary, the mobile app is an extension of the website, offering the same features but with additional capabilities such as augmented reality and a mobile ticket wallet that would make the experience more convenient and interactive for the users.
Conclusion
The web and mobile platform created for Kingston Creative provides a new revenue stream for local creatives and attractions by making it easy for them to reach a wider audience and increase their sales through digital distribution. The platform also enables local cultural and creative vendors to sell tickets and increase their revenue, and the interactive map feature helps to drive more foot traffic to local venues and attractions.
